Original Anfibio sofa bed designed by Alessandro Becchi for Giovannetti, Italy, in 1971. Upholstered in dark brown leather, the sofa is defined by its oversized tubular form, deep seat and distinctive leather lacing along the front.
Designed as a piece of furniture in transformation, the Anfibio converts from a generous sofa into a double bed by releasing the leather straps at the sides and unfolding its padded structure. Its low, enveloping construction reflects the radical rethinking of domestic furniture taking place in Italy during the early 1970s. The model was documented in Domus in 1971 and included in the landmark Italy: The New Domestic Landscape exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1972.
This example retains its dark brown leather, with creasing, patina and wear consistent with age and use. The leather remains supple and the sofa presents beautifully.
Width: 96 in / 244 cm
Depth: 36 in / 91 cm
Height: 26 in / 66 cm
Mattress: 52 × 72 in / 132 × 183 cm
Condition: Good vintage condition with patina and wear consistent with age and use.
Available for rental only.
